No Contested Races as Deadline Looms

As the Thursday deadline to file an intention to run looms, there are potentially no contested races for the March 30 Annual Town Election.

Currently, one person has pulled papers for each of the 11 open positions on the town election ballot. If no one else pulls papers by 5 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 5, there will be no contested races in the election.

Two people, Ryan James Poteat for Park and Recreation Commissioner and Julie Zelermeyer Perlman for Planning Board, have not yet returned papers and been certified to appear on the ballot. The deadline to do that is 5 p.m. Monday, Feb. 9.

If Poteat and Perlman do not return their papers by the Feb. 9 deadline, and no one else pulls for those positions by the Feb. 5 deadline, there will be no candidates on the ballot for those offices.

Nine people have returned their papers and the Town Clerk has certified the signatures, so that they are officially on the ballot. They are: Charles G. Russo for Select Board, Liam J. Vesely for Board of Assessors, Ingrid J. Mayyasi and Elizabeth Mathews Iwasaki for Goodnow Library Trustee, Susan Ruth Sama for Board of Health, Julie Leigh Durgin and Ellen Lederer-DeFrancesco for Sudbury School Committee, and Ravi Simon of Sudbury and Jason McLure of Lincoln for Lincoln-Sudbury Regional District School Committee.

Any Sudbury registered voter may run for office. Prospective candidates do not need permission from a board or committee to run.

To appear on the ballot, prospective candidates must file an intention to run, gather the signatures of at least 50 registered Sudbury voters on a set of nomination papers, return those signatures by the Feb. 9 deadline, and the Town Clerk’s office must certify those signatures.
